PolyAI is hiring a Senior Agent Design Engineer to lead complex, high-impact agentic AI projects. This is a senior individual contributor role bridging conversational UX design and technical implementation—for someone who thinks critically about how conversations should feel, not just how systems should work.
You'll own the full picture of agent design: mapping user journeys, shaping dialogue and tone, and building underlying systems (prompting, tool access, context engineering). The role sits at the intersection of design and engineering, ideal for someone frustrated by artificial gaps between these disciplines.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead the hardest agent work: complex, ambiguous, high-risk initiatives spanning multiple teams, markets, or strategic accounts, getting them live faster than expected.
- Build and own agentic workflows end-to-end: multi-agent loops, automated evaluation pipelines, autonomous tooling.
- Set the quality bar: develop reusable design approaches, evaluation methods, and measurement that improve outcomes across projects.
- Own client enablement: run client and partner onboarding, shape how the team enables customer self-service.
- Raise the team and influence direction: mentor Agent Designers at multiple levels, own areas of the Agent Design roadmap, turn delivery problems into product/engineering priorities.
Required qualifications:
- 5+ years in technical or design-adjacent roles at tech companies, with genuine hands-on experience (design background with technical depth, or engineering with strong UX/language sensibility).
- Production Python: build, test, debug, deploy integrations; meaningfully review others' code.
- Demonstrable impact beyond your own projects: patterns others adopted, evaluation approaches that spread, colleagues materially improved by your reviews.
- Practical LLM familiarity: prompt engineering, tool use, retrieval, context management.
- Hands-on agentic systems experience: orchestration, tool-calling, multi-step workflows, plus evaluation expertise (automated pipelines, non-deterministic behavior measurement).
