Element Biosciences is seeking an experienced Scientist in Biochemistry to join the Research and Development team. This role focuses on developing, optimizing, and supporting protein-based reagents, assays, and workflows for next-generation sequencing and multiomic product portfolios.
Key responsibilities include leading the development and validation of protein-based assays, designing and executing experiments on protein reagents, antibodies, enzymes, and biologically derived reagents. The scientist will optimize reagent formulations to improve assay performance, stability, robustness, and manufacturability. The role involves designing rigorous experiments using sound statistical principles to identify root causes and solve complex technical problems, establishing analytical methods for protein characterization and quality assessment, and supporting technology transfer from research into product development and manufacturing.
The position requires generating detailed experimental documentation, technical reports, protocols, and design recommendations, driving troubleshooting efforts for challenging technical issues across multiple product development programs, and evaluating emerging technologies and scientific literature. Cross-functional collaboration is essential, working with teams in chemistry, molecular biology, systems engineering, software, operations, manufacturing, quality, and product management. The scientist will mentor junior scientists and contribute technical expertise across multiple R&D projects, presenting scientific findings to cross-functional teams and senior leadership.
The ideal candidate holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Biology, Bioengineering, or related discipline with 2+ years of relevant industry experience. Strong foundation in protein biochemistry and biochemical assay development is required, along with experience developing, optimizing, and troubleshooting complex biological assays. Hands-on experience with protein analytical techniques such as SDS-PAGE, western blotting, ELISA, UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence-based assays, HPLC/FPLC, SEC, DLS, SPR, BLI, or mass spectrometry is essential. Experience with DOE methodologies and statistical analysis software such as JMP or GraphPad Prism is valued. Experience supporting regulated product development, design controls, or technology transfer is highly desirable. Experience developing reagents or assays for genomics, sequencing, spatial biology, or multiomic applications is a plus.
This is a full-time, exempt position based on-site in San Diego with minimal travel (up to 5%). The role reports to the Associate Director of Biochemistry.
