Sofar Ocean is seeking a Routing Specialist for their APAC team to support mission-critical operational tasks on a night shift basis. You will work closely with the Wayfinder team on ship routing support, critical operational tasks for data and service products, ocean science data integration, and internal tooling improvements.
You are highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable with technology and computer systems. You may have experience with spreadsheets, no-code tools like Retool and Notion, or coding. You thrive in precision-focused environments and bring collaborative harmony to your work. You have strong time management, work independently when needed, and are confident in decision-making, including navigating cross-cultural communication between Japanese clients and the global team.
This role requires regular overnight shift coverage as part of your standard schedule. You will need to be available and willing to work overnight hours; specific shift hours and scheduling expectations will be discussed during the interview process.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Previous experience in meteorology, oceanography, or maritime-related field
- Bachelor's degree in oceanography, climatology, geography, or related discipline
- Experience in shipping or maritime industry, particularly with ship routing or weather routing
- Familiarity with observation and forecast data including WaveWatch III, HYCOM, and ECMWF
- Strong understanding of mid- and long-range forecasting and weather patterns
- Comfortable with data analysis and modern web applications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience with Japanese maritime companies or institutions is a strong plus
- Ability to work weekend rotations
- Genuine passion for and/or connection to the oceans

- Proficiency in additional languages beyond Japanese
- Experience collaborating across time zones and internationally distributed teams
- Familiarity with Japanese maritime regulations, shipping culture, or relationships with Japanese port authorities and logistics companies
- Native or near-native fluency in Japanese (verbal and written)
