The Customer Retention Manager is responsible for reducing churn, improving customer health, and protecting recurring revenue through early risk detection, cross-functional mitigation, and scalable retention programs. This role partners closely with Renewals, Customer Success, Customer Engagement, Competitive Intelligence, and Pricing & Packaging to orchestrate coordinated customer-save strategies.
Key responsibilities include maintaining a standardized customer risk scoring framework leveraging health signals, product usage, support patterns, sentiment, and competitive exposure. The role identifies early risk indicators such as discount cliffs, adoption gaps, under-deployed licenses, and sponsor turnover, partnering with Renewal Ops and Data teams to automate risk workflows in Salesforce.
The manager leads weekly renewal risk reviews and war rooms with Renewals, CSMs/CEMs, and Sales to align on mitigation actions. They build account-level mitigation plans that include adoption interventions, executive alignment, value reinforcement, and commercial flexibility. Working with Pricing & Packaging and Deal Desk, they design controlled commercial offers including term/ramp structures, New Product Introductions, and Product Bundling.
As a subject-matter expert for Renewals, the manager provides guidance, playbooks, and strategic support to overcome critical renewal objections. They diagnose downsell and downgrade risks, recommend right-sizing strategies, and deliver value-based narratives to reinforce ROI. They partner with Competitive Intelligence to address competitive pricing challenges and coach teams on TCO and switching-cost comparisons.
The role launches and manages proactive churn-prevention programs such as early renewal health checks, competitive threat campaigns, and discount cliff mitigation. They develop and maintain risk playbooks for consistent execution and partner with Enablement to deliver training on objection handling and retention strategies.
Responsibilities also include delivering monthly churn insights including root causes, save rates, objection trends, and program impact. The manager owns cohort analyses, risk heatmaps, and retention dashboards, providing actionable recommendations to Product, Pricing, Support, and Leadership teams. They improve CRM/CS tool workflows to enhance visibility into churn risk and standardize processes for risk identification, objection handling, escalations, and mitigation SLAs.
