OpenAI's Personalization-Memory team is seeking a Research Engineer or Research Scientist to develop memory and personalization capabilities for frontier AI models. The role focuses on improving how AI agents learn from prior interactions to become more helpful and efficient over time.
You will own a research agenda centered on memory usage and personalization in OpenAI's frontier models, working across reinforcement learning, dataset creation, evaluations, and post-training methods. Key responsibilities include building robust evaluations to track modeling improvements, designing and implementing code across the research stack, and collaborating closely with research and product teams to influence technical solutions that reach users.
The ideal candidate has deep experience with frontier model post-training and machine learning applications. You should be passionate about personalization and building personalized assistants, comfortable working with user signals and human data to create reliable training and evaluation signals, and skilled at debugging large ML codebases. The role values principled research approaches, craftsmanship, and the ability to iterate quickly in a fast-paced, technically complex environment.
This is a hybrid position based in San Francisco requiring 3 days per week in the office. OpenAI offers relocation assistance for new employees. The team collaborates across ChatGPT and other agentic products to realize the vision of truly personalized AI assistants.
