UPSIDE Foods, the world's leading cultivated meat company, is seeking a Research Associate II to support the Cell Culture Media (CCM) team in Emeryville, California. This role directly supports media development (MD) and Raw Material Qualification (RMQ) workflows, focusing on running experiments to assess the functionality of cell culture media components and formulations to ensure robust manufacturability and functionality.
Key responsibilities include executing mammalian cell culture operations (thawing, subculturing, freezing, aseptic techniques), independently setting up and executing experiments with minimal guidance, performing troubleshooting experiments to assess scalability of media components and formulations, and managing data collection, interpretation, and analysis. You will work across traditional and high-throughput cell culture platforms at multiple scales, provide input for subsequent experiments based on data and project objectives, and collaborate cross-functionally with cell culture testing and media manufacturing teams.
The ideal candidate has a background in cell culture, demonstrates independent execution capability in the lab, and actively seeks new skills and methods to enhance their knowledge. This is a hands-on research role supporting the development of cultivated meat technology that addresses environmental and ethical impacts of the modern food system. UPSIDE Foods has achieved FDA and USDA approval for cultivated meat sales in the US, raised over $600 million in funding from investors including Cargill, SoftBank, and Tyson, and has been recognized as one of TIME's World's Top GreenTech Companies 2026.
