Axios is hiring a senior reporter to become the subject matter expert on the business and capital transforming the defense industry. This is a unique opportunity to cover one of the fastest-evolving sectors, where venture capital is pouring billions into defense startups, AI and autonomy are reshaping procurement priorities, and a new generation of companies is challenging traditional defense giants.
You will break news and explain the deals, investments, and business strategies reshaping the defense marketplace. Key responsibilities include:
• Contribute to a bi-weekly newsletter exploring major trends and news in defense business
• Break news on venture capital, startups, M&A, public companies, and defense procurement
• Help readers understand how Pentagon priorities, procurement shifts, and industrial policy influence investments and corporate strategy
• Establish yourself as a public authority on defense business and capital through speaking engagements and media appearances
Ideal candidates bring reporting experience in fast-paced news environments, a track record of landing major scoops and conceptualizing big ideas, and strong writing skills for online and newsletter formats. You should be comfortable on stage for live interviews, excel at cross-team collaboration, and embrace Axios' "Smart Brevity" writing philosophy. The role requires excellent verbal and written communication skills and a commitment to building an inclusive environment.
