You'll lead design quality and team growth for a core product area, managing a team of product designers while staying deeply involved in the most challenging design problems. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll own outcomes and raise the bar for the team rather than carrying your own delivery workload.
Key responsibilities include:
**Tackle challenging design problems**: Step in on zero-to-one work, cross-surface conflicts, and high-stakes ambiguous problems. Turn ambiguity into clear direction the team can execute against. Partner with Product and Engineering leadership on tradeoffs spanning multiple squads. Set design quality standards through your judgment on hard problems, not by owning delivery. Critically assess AI-generated solutions and help your team develop the same judgment.
**Lead and grow designers**: Set the craft bar for your surface and hold the line—your reports' output reflects your standard. Run regular design reviews with specific, actionable feedback. Mentor designers on craft, problem framing, and operating in ambiguity. Balance time on the team's hardest problems with day-to-day support.
**Raise quality across the team**: Bring structure to problem framing before jumping to UI. Push for measurable outcomes and clear success metrics. Improve requirement quality with Product and reduce rework. Elevate critique and design discussion. Be the design voice in cross-functional conversations about quality, scope, and timeline tradeoffs.
**Design with systems in mind**: Ensure your team designs with reusable components and scalable patterns. Reduce inconsistencies and UX debt. Collaborate with engineers to protect system integrity. Propose improvements to shared components and documentation.
You'll bring deep experience designing consumer-facing products, with some exposure to business/professional user design. You have a proven track record of holding quality bars under stakeholder pressure, managing high-performing design teams, and operating close to hard design problems without owning delivery pipelines yourself.
