Skydio is the leading US autonomous drone company, serving defense, public safety, and enterprise customers. As a Product Design Engineer for Camera systems, you will design, prototype, and refine the mechanical systems that enable camera modules to perform reliably in demanding environments.
You will own the mechanical design and integration of camera modules, working hands-on with components including lenses, image sensors, actuators, thermal solutions, electronics, flex circuits, seals, and structural elements. This is an individual-contributor role requiring detailed mechanical design expertise and rapid prototyping capability.
Key responsibilities include: creating 3D CAD models and production-ready 2D drawings for camera parts and assemblies; designing and building prototypes to evaluate new concepts and mechanical architectures; designing test jigs, fixtures, and measurement setups for camera development and validation; performing tolerance analyses for fit, alignment, and optical positioning; supporting finite element analysis with model preparation and physical test correlation; planning and conducting laboratory testing with clear documentation of findings; characterizing camera components for dimensions, torque, force, stiffness, thermal performance, and environmental resistance; investigating mechanical failures and developing corrective actions; and supporting manufacturing, quality, and supply chain teams throughout the product development cycle from concept through mass production.
You should have a Master's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent practical experience. Required skills include proficiency in 3D CAD (CATIA strongly preferred), knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, experience with rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, CNC machining), familiarity with manufacturing processes (injection molding, CNC, metal forming, casting), practical laboratory skills with mechanical measurement equipment, and strong documentation and communication abilities. A detail-oriented, methodical approach to debugging and failure analysis is essential. Experience with cameras, precision mechanisms, robotics, drones, or imaging systems is highly valued. FAA Part 107 certification is strongly encouraged within the first 60 days.
