Turnitin, a global leader in educational integrity and learning outcomes for over 25 years, is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join its shared services team. The role focuses on designing and developing scalable backend systems using Java and serverless architectures (AWS Lambda), with complementary frontend capabilities.
You will be responsible for architecting and optimizing RESTful APIs and event-driven systems that power Turnitin's suite of products including Feedback Studio, Originality, Gradescope, ExamSoft, and iThenticate. Key responsibilities include designing distributed systems for high performance and cost efficiency, implementing CI/CD pipelines, conducting peer reviews, and creating comprehensive technical documentation.
The role emphasizes mentorship—you'll guide junior developers, share best practices, and collaborate across cross-functional teams spanning Europe and the USA. You'll work with Architects, Product Managers, and engineering leads to deliver innovative solutions for an award-winning educational platform serving over 21,000 academic institutions, publishers, and corporations.
Essential qualifications include 8+ years of backend development expertise with strong Java proficiency, hands-on experience with serverless frameworks and AWS technologies (Lambda, DynamoDB, API Gateway, SNS/SQS/EventBridge), and solid frontend skills (React, Web Components). You should have deep knowledge of distributed systems, scalability, data modeling, and software development best practices including design patterns, TDD, and code profiling. Experience with CI/CD tools and the ability to communicate effectively in agile, distributed environments is required.
Preferred qualifications include understanding or experience with AI/ML technologies.
