REGENT is developing Seagliders—wing-in-ground-effect aircraft that travel just above water, combining airplane speed (180 mph) with boat economics. The company is scaling from prototype to Viceroy, its first certified production vehicle, and seeking a Principal Software Engineer to set software technical direction across all vehicle programs. In this principal-level individual contributor role reporting to the Director of Software Engineering, you will own the avionics software architecture for Viceroy and establish reusable patterns, standards, and certification strategies for future programs. You'll design time/memory partitioning, criticality segregation, redundancy management, inter-subsystem interfaces, and timing budgets. You'll partner with program chief engineers on architecture and design reviews, drive the software certification strategy through classification-society and flag-state authority reviews, and lead software system integration including SIL/HIL campaigns and vehicle-level milestones. You'll stay hands-on: designing, implementing, and verifying flight-critical software modules yourself. You'll establish engineering standards, mentor senior engineers across teams, qualify development and verification tools, and govern COTS/SOUP acceptance. You'll advise leadership on architecture, certification risk, and build-vs-buy decisions. Required expertise includes full-lifecycle RTCA DO-178C (DAL A/B preferred), vehicle-level architecture ownership on aircraft/eVTOL/UAS programs, and a track record authoring certification plans (PSAC/SDP/SVP) and carrying staged authority reviews to closure. You need deep knowledge of partitioned, redundancy-managed systems (scheduling, WCET, voting, health management), strong embedded C/C++ on RTOS or bare metal, and deterministic avionics networking (ARINC 664/AFDX, TTP, CAN, DDS). Systems engineering fluency in requirements decomposition, interface control, and hazard/criticality flowdown is essential. Bonuses include MATLAB/Simulink/Embedded Coder, multi-program technical direction experience, chief-engineer background, autonomy/FMS expertise, RTCA/EUROCAE participation, DO-330/DO-331 knowledge, maritime/classification-society exposure, remote operations experience, or software process startup experience.
