Jobber is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join the Foundations group within the Software Engineering team. This is a high-impact individual contributor role reporting to a Senior Manager, Software Engineering, focused on driving platform strategy and solving cross-team technical challenges.
The Foundations group owns core technologies that power Jobber's mobile app, web app, and design system. Within this group, three teams (UX Foundations, Web Platform, and Mobile Platform) build the foundational infrastructure that all feature teams depend on. Recent initiatives include migrating the web app from Rails views to React, shipping over-the-air mobile updates, and building offline support for field workers.
As Principal Software Engineer, you will identify and tackle platform-level problems before they land on any team's roadmap. You'll prototype solutions, write design documents, and hand off working implementations to teams for scaling. Current focus areas include extending offline architecture across the mobile app, replacing third-party end-to-end testing with an in-house system, migrating the mobile app to Expo, and scaling agentic development through Amplify (Jobber's in-house AI engineering platform).
Key responsibilities include: understanding customer workflows to design future platform needs; researching emerging technologies and prototyping new approaches; owning technical decisions for org-wide initiatives with clear documentation of trade-offs; delivering high-quality code while mentoring engineers; building AI-assisted workflows as a core practice; and translating complex technical problems for leadership, product, and engineering teams.
You should bring a track record of driving technical initiatives across multiple teams, deep technical judgment on architecture and code, strong front-end experience with React and TypeScript, and hands-on fluency with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, etc.). Clear technical writing (RFCs, design documents, ADRs) and experience growing senior engineers through mentorship are essential. Production mobile experience (React Native or native iOS/Android) and GraphQL/Rails production experience are valued but not required.
