We are seeking a Middle-Market Commercial Underwriter to join our growing team in Dayton, OH. This role is ideal for someone with strong commercial insurance experience who wants to take ownership of accounts, deepen relationships with carriers and brokers, and contribute to a high-growth organization.
In this position, you will evaluate and manage middle-market commercial insurance risks, develop strong broker relationships, and support profitable business growth. You will review new and renewal submissions, analyze risk exposures, assess pricing and coverage structures, and partner closely with sales and carrier partners to deliver timely underwriting solutions. Key responsibilities include:
• Review and evaluate new and renewal middle-market commercial insurance submissions
• Analyze risk characteristics, loss history, financial information, and underwriting data
• Assess pricing adequacy, coverage structures, and eligibility guidelines
• Develop underwriting recommendations and make risk selection decisions within authority levels
• Communicate proactively with brokers, carrier partners, and internal teams regarding submissions, quotes, renewals, and underwriting requirements
• Manage accounts through the underwriting lifecycle including quoting, binding, endorsements, and renewals
• Build and maintain strong broker relationships through responsiveness and service
• Monitor account profitability and identify exposure trends
• Maintain accurate underwriting documentation and file management
• Partner closely with sales leadership to support business development and retention efforts
• Contribute to underwriting process improvements and operational efficiencies
The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of commercial underwriting principles, sound decision-making skills, and the ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
Qualifications:
• 4+ years of commercial insurance underwriting experience preferred
• Strong understanding of General Liability and middle market commercial lines underwriting principles
• Experience working with retail brokers, MGAs, wholesalers, or carriers
• Ability to independently manage multiple accounts and priorities in a fast-paced environment
• Strong analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills
• Effective verbal and written communication abilities
• High attention to detail and strong sense of accountability
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and insurance agency/carrier systems
• Collaborative mindset with the ability to work cross-functionally
Preferred qualifications include experience working for an insurance carrier, MGA, wholesaler, or insurtech platform; exposure to commercial lines products (General Liability, Property, BOP, Workers Compensation, Commercial Auto); experience in small to middle-market commercial business; insurance licensing, coursework, or industry designations; and experience in fast-paced or high-growth environments.
