Reflection AI is building open-weight AI systems and seeks a technical leader to build and grow the Data Platform team. This role combines hands-on engineering leadership with team management—you'll lead ~10 data platform engineers while staying deeply involved in architecture and code.
You'll own the technical direction of the data backbone that powers research, training, and production environments. This includes designing ingestion and orchestration patterns for batch and streaming workloads, building scalable compute and storage foundations, and establishing reproducible pipelines with versioning and isolated execution. You'll work closely with research and production teams to enable high-velocity experimentation on a unified data layer.
Key responsibilities:
- Hire, mentor, and grow a team of exceptional data platform engineers, raising the bar with each addition
- Guide technical direction: ingestion/orchestration, compute/storage foundations, reproducibility systems
- Enable research and production teams through reliable, scalable data infrastructure
- Establish data quality, lineage, and governance signals for confident production decisions
- Maintain cost and performance predictability through guardrails and continuous tuning
- Stay hands-on with design reviews, architecture decisions, and critical code
You'll work with modern data stack tools: Spark, Flink, Beam, Airflow, Dagster, Kafka, PubSub, BigQuery, Snowflake, Iceberg, Delta Lake, and data quality frameworks.
Required: 8+ years of engineering experience with strong data engineering foundation; proven track record shipping production-grade pipelines at large scale (tens of TBs to PBs daily); staff/principal-level IC experience before moving to leadership; team management experience (~5–10 people) or clear leadership readiness; deep expertise in at least one of ingestion/orchestration, storage/processing engines, or data quality/lineage systems; fluency in modern data stack; comfort in high-agency, fast-paced environments.
Reflection offers competitive salary and equity, comprehensive health benefits, unlimited PTO (US), 22 weeks paid parental leave, visa sponsorship, and regular team building.
