Wafer is building AI systems that automatically optimize inference workloads across silicon. The company is seeking a Member of Staff to bridge technical compute infrastructure and business economics. In this role, you will work at the intersection of engineering, finance, and supplier relationships to drive critical capacity and cost decisions. Your responsibilities include: - Partner with engineering and finance teams to identify which AI models and hardware configurations are profitable and what factors drive profitability changes. - Build financial models that connect inference performance, hardware utilization, pricing, compute costs, and cash requirements. - Evaluate GPU supply options and supplier proposals, comparing price, availability, contract terms, deposits, reliability, and flexibility. - Source and negotiate compute capacity, then track whether actual delivery and performance align with agreements. - Translate shifting demand patterns and hardware economics into concrete capacity planning decisions. - Identify and resolve discrepancies across usage data, invoices, and contracts; build systems to ensure financial accuracy. You will operate with complete autonomy on how to solve problems, working directly with engineering, finance, and suppliers. Your work should result in better decisions about compute infrastructure, cost management, and scaling strategy. The company values infinitely resourceful problem-solving, exceptionalism, unreasonable standards, company-over-self thinking, high emotional intelligence, rapid learning, and first-principles reasoning. REQUIREMENTS: - Deep understanding of compute infrastructure beyond GPU spec sheets; ability to explain how GPU architecture, memory, networking, and software affect real-world workload costs. - Exceptional quantitative skills: can build clear financial models, challenge assumptions, and distinguish between profit and cash flow. - Approximately 1–5 years of relevant experience. Background in compute infrastructure, semiconductors, finance, or investing is valuable; demonstrated ability to execute this work exceptionally well is what matters most. - Credibility with engineers and commercial acumen with suppliers; ability to ask precise questions and follow details through to decisions. - Ability to work without a detailed spec: can take a half-defined problem, identify what information matters, and return with concrete answers.
