Solve Intelligence is building AI-powered infrastructure for the global intellectual property landscape. This is a hybrid Legal and Product Engineer role based in London or New York, requiring regular travel to Japan.
You will serve as the bridge between patent law and AI technology, translating legal requirements into product and technical specifications. This is a senior individual contributor role with significant influence over product direction and client success.
Key responsibilities:
- AI Output Engineering: Partner with the AI team to iterate on algorithms and prompt engineering, specializing large language models for patent-specific tasks including claim analysis, prior art comparison, and obviousness assessments.
- Legal Benchmarking: Build proprietary datasets and evaluation frameworks to measure AI performance against USPTO and international patent office requirements.
- Product Roadmap: Serve as the internal voice of patent practitioners, translating client insights from global firms into high-priority product features.
- Strategic Partnership: Act as a technical thought partner for IP teams at major firms like DLA Piper, leading pilots and ensuring AI scales across prosecution and litigation workflows.
- Playbook Development: Document and scale best practices for AI adoption across sectors including biotech and deep-tech software.
- Japan Market Leadership: Be the technical voice of Solve for Japanese law firms and corporate IP departments. Run in-depth product demos and technical discussions in Japanese, support the team at Japanese conferences and client meetings, and lead pilots with Japanese clients.
- JPO Readiness: Ensure the AI handles Japanese-language patent documents and Japan Patent Office practice as effectively as it handles the USPTO and EPO, and build benchmarks to prove it.
The company has achieved 20-30% month-over-month revenue growth, serves 600+ global IP teams, and has raised $55M in funding from Y Combinator, 20VC, and other elite investors. Users report 50-90% efficiency gains using the platform.
You will work directly with a founding team of AI PhDs and systems experts, including the CEO (PhD in AI from UCL, ex-Dyson and Alan Turing Institute), CRO (PhD in AI from Gatsby Unit UCL, ex-Huawei R&D), and CTO (MEng Computer Science, ex-Qualcomm).
REQUIREMENTS:
Must-Haves:
- Admitted to practice before the USPTO, EPO, or JPO
- 3+ years of direct experience in patent prosecution
- Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or Life Sciences
- Native or business-level fluency in Japanese (JLPT N1 or equivalent); ability to conduct detailed technical and legal conversations in Japanese with senior IP teams
- Based in London or New York and willing to travel to Japan regularly
Preferred:
- Hands-on experience with prompt engineering and LLM tools
- Proven ability to manage client relationships and lead strategic product demos
- Deep belief that AI will fundamentally redefine the legal landscape
- Existing relationships with Japanese law firms or corporate IP departments
