SoFi is seeking an experienced Tax Information Reporting & Withholding (IRW) Advisor to serve as the subject matter expert on domestic and international tax compliance frameworks. This role oversees the company's global tax compliance infrastructure, working closely with Finance, Legal, Technology, and Operations teams to ensure regulatory compliance, minimize tax exposure, and optimize tax processes.
Key responsibilities include:
• Provide technical expertise on US Information Reporting and Withholding rules (Form 1099, 1042/1042-S, 8966) and global regulatory frameworks (FATCA, CRS, CARF, DAC7).
• Write business requirements and work with tax APIs/engines for software engineering teams.
• Demonstrate deep understanding of cost-basis accounting, information reporting, tax withholding, and state/international tax implications for digital products.
• Oversee collection, review, and validation of tax documentation (W-9, W-8 series, self-certifications) across clients, vendors, and counterparties.
• Ensure accurate calculation, withholding, and timely remittance of tax on US-source FDAP income and foreign partnership allocations.
• Manage end-to-end preparation, reconciliation, and filing of annual tax information returns with the IRS and foreign tax authorities.
• Partner with IT and Operations to design and implement automated systems for onboarding, withholding calculations, and regulatory reporting.
• Lead internal control assessments, respond to tax authority audits, and manage risk remediation.
• Monitor legislative and regulatory developments, assess business impact, and update policies and training.
• Advise business units on tax reporting requirements for new product developments, particularly Digits Assets reporting.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; 5+ years dedicated experience in tax information reporting and withholding at a public accounting firm, financial institution, or corporate tax department. Strong expertise in IRC Chapters 3, 4 (FATCA), and 61, Backup withholding, and OECD CRS. CPA or Enrolled Agent designation preferred; J.D., LL.M. in Taxation, or Master's in Taxation strongly preferred.
