Xero is seeking a Lead Product Manager for Payments Risk to build and scale risk capabilities within their payments platform. You will own product strategy and execution across two core areas: merchant risk (KYB/KYC, eligibility, underwriting, segmentation, monitoring) and transaction risk (fraud detection, monitoring, disputes, chargebacks, reserves, payout risk).
Key responsibilities include: developing the product strategy and roadmap for merchant and transaction risk; building capabilities for merchant eligibility, underwriting, and financial exposure management; creating transaction fraud detection and decisioning systems using signals, rules, scoring, and velocity limits; developing controls for disputes, chargebacks, reserves, and holds; building tooling and workflows for investigation and risk operations; designing reusable risk platform capabilities including decisioning, rules, signals, and case management; partnering with Engineering and Data on APIs, data models, and decisioning systems; evaluating build-versus-partner decisions for risk capabilities; and translating risk appetite into product controls while balancing fraud prevention against merchant friction and conversion.
You must bring deep, hands-on payments risk product experience from a payments platform, PSP, acquirer, PayFac, or marketplace environment. Required expertise spans both merchant risk (KYB/KYC, onboarding, eligibility, underwriting, monitoring) and transaction risk (fraud detection, monitoring, disputes, chargebacks, reserves). You should have significant Product Management experience in technically complex payments/fintech environments, strong understanding of financial exposure, experience building risk decisioning with rules and data-driven models, strong analytical skills with fraud and transaction data, and experience partnering with Engineering, Data Science, Risk, Compliance, and Operations teams. Experience with payment processors, acquirers, and third-party risk providers is valued.
Success means legitimate merchants can accept payments with minimal friction, higher-risk merchants and transactions are appropriately identified and treated, fraud and losses remain within risk appetite, and risk capabilities scale across processors and markets.
