Xero is seeking a Lead Engineer to join the Reporting Platform team, which serves over 150 reports to millions of users, accountants, and bookkeepers globally. The team operates across Wellington and Vancouver, with a hybrid model centered in Auckland.
You will balance approximately 50% hands-on coding and project execution alongside senior engineers with 50% strategic work focused on technical discovery, incident management, and long-term roadmap planning.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead technical design and implementation of product features in the Reporting platform, balancing speed, quality, and architectural standards across complex systems.
- Modernize legacy .NET frameworks, safely shifting traffic and rolling out updates at scale to improve system architecture.
- Drive AI integration opportunities, embedding AI directly into reporting products and the software development lifecycle to enhance engineer experience.
- Lead incident response, participate in on-call rotations, and establish robust testing and continuous deployment strategies.
- Coach and mentor senior engineers, improve multi-quarter project planning, and foster an inclusive engineering culture.
You bring experience operating in high-volume, high-transaction environments (fintech, banking, major SaaS, or medtech). Full-stack proficiency with .NET/C#, React, and SQL is preferred, with particular emphasis on legacy modernization expertise. You demonstrate strong technical maturity, ownership, bias for action, excellent communication, and a builder mindset. You excel at cross-functional collaboration, technical discovery, breaking down silos, and aligning stakeholders across multi-quarter initiatives.
