Proxima Fusion, Europe's fastest-growing fusion company and best-funded fusion player, is seeking an Industrial Controls Engineer to join its TechOps team in Munich. The company is developing next-generation stellarator fusion power plants (Alpha and Stellaris) and is backed by over €650M in funding.
In this role, you will own the controls engineering for new magnet factory equipment supporting coil winding, impregnation, joining, and end-of-line testing. You'll architect control systems and develop PLC software primarily on Beckhoff TwinCAT platforms, working at the frontier of advanced manufacturing where production lines, tooling, and processes are being developed from the ground up.
Key responsibilities include:
- Participate in equipment conceptual development for new magnet manufacturing cells
- Architect control system architecture and electrical schematics, including sensor/actuator selection
- Write, debug, and maintain PLC programs in Structured Text (IEC 61131-3) on Beckhoff TwinCAT
- Specify and implement field network topology (EtherCAT, Profinet, EtherNet/IP, OPC-UA)
- Set up and tune servo drives and VFDs for precision motion control
- Design HMI/SCADA screens for operator use and troubleshooting
- Commission equipment end-to-end: FAT/SAT, installation, integration, and process validation
- Perform hands-on electrical troubleshooting using multimeters and oscilloscopes
- Implement control-reliable safety systems per relevant standards
- Document control architecture, code, and equipment operation
- Collaborate with manufacturing, mechanical, and process engineers
Required qualifications:
- 2–5 years of controls engineering experience for manufacturing or automation equipment
- In-depth knowledge of Beckhoff controls systems (TwinCAT 3)
- Strong Structured Text (IEC 61131-3) programming skills
- Proficiency in field network topology, theory and practice
- Experience commissioning servo drives/VFDs and integrating sensors, actuators, and safety devices
- Familiarity with HMI/SCADA platforms (TwinCAT HMI, WinCC, Ignition, or similar)
- Working knowledge of electrical and machine safety standards (EN 60204-1, IEC 61439, ISO 13849)
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or related field
- Ability to use hand tools and diagnostic instruments
Nice-to-have skills include CAD electrical drafting (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN), Python/SQL scripting, cryogenics or superconducting magnet experience, machine vision, and greenfield commissioning experience.
