Shield AI, a venture-backed defense-tech company, is seeking an Indirect Tax Manager to lead and own the company's indirect tax function across U.S. sales and use tax, property tax, and international VAT/GST compliance.
In this role, you will manage the full lifecycle of U.S. sales and use tax compliance, including nexus analysis, taxability determinations, registrations, return filings, payments, and account reconciliations. You'll review customer contracts and product offerings to determine appropriate tax treatment, advise the Accounts Payable team on use tax accruals and exemption opportunities, and oversee sales and use tax audits, notices, refund claims, and voluntary disclosures.
You will also oversee business personal property tax compliance, including annual renditions, assessments, and payments. This includes partnering with the Accounting team and external service providers to ensure filings are complete and accurate, identifying opportunities for appeals and exemptions, and managing property tax audits.
As the company expands internationally, you'll support VAT/GST compliance and advisory matters, coordinating with local finance teams and external advisors on registrations, returns, recoverability, and tax authority inquiries. You'll advise on indirect tax implications of cross-border sales, services, and entry into new jurisdictions, and support indirect tax due diligence for acquisitions.
A key focus will be developing a roadmap to automate and scale the indirect tax function. You'll evaluate and implement indirect tax technology solutions, partner with IT and Accounting to integrate tax requirements into the ERP system, improve processes across order-to-cash and procure-to-pay cycles, and establish taxability matrices, compliance calendars, and controls. You'll also manage external advisors and service providers.
Required: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field; 5+ years of indirect tax experience in public accounting or industry; strong technical knowledge of U.S. multistate sales and use tax; experience with property tax compliance; demonstrated ability to research complex tax issues; experience managing external advisors; strong project management and communication skills; ability to operate in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
Preferred: CPA, CMI, JD, or MST certification; international VAT/GST experience; experience with Vertex, Avalara, or ONESOURCE; tax automation and data analytics experience; aerospace, defense, manufacturing, or software industry background; experience supporting acquisitions and international expansion.
