Valar Atomics is seeking a Health Physicist to serve as the technical backbone of the Radiation Protection Program at their advanced nuclear pilot facility in Orangeville, Utah. This is a hands-on technical role where you will be the subject matter expert responsible for all aspects of radiological safety—from calculating shielding requirements to designing and implementing the dosimetry program. You will begin with an onboarding period at the company's Los Angeles headquarters before deploying to the Utah pilot site. Working closely with the Principal Health Physicist and Operations team, you will ensure the radiation protection program is robust, defensible, and built for real-world operational demands. Key responsibilities include: developing and maintaining the technical basis for the Radiation Protection Program (internal/external dosimetry, instrumentation, airborne radioactivity monitoring); leading ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) reviews for high-hazard work and performing shielding calculations and dose assessments; writing clear technical procedures that translate 10 CFR 835 regulatory requirements into actionable field steps; overseeing selection, calibration, and maintenance of the radiological instrumentation fleet; developing and delivering radiation safety training to staff at all levels; and managing regulatory reporting and recordkeeping to ensure DOE and state compliance. You are a problem-solver who doesn't just identify high dose rates but engineers solutions to lower them. You communicate complex radiological concepts clearly to engineers, operators, and regulators. You are detail-oriented, take pride in precise calculations and documentation, and are excited to build a program from the ground up in a fast-paced startup environment. Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related engineering discipline; OR 10+ years of progressive experience as a senior HPT/RPT or Naval ELT; OR current CHP certification. 3–5 years of applied professional experience in operational health physics with demonstrated expertise in at least two of: technical writing, dose assessment, ALARA planning, instrumentation, or training. Expert-level knowledge of 10 CFR 835 or 10 CFR 20. Strong technical writing skills. Ability to relocate to Los Angeles temporarily for training, then to Utah for ongoing operations. Preferred: DOE or NRC-licensed reactor facility experience, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program background, knowledge of DOE-STD-1098 and 49 CFR transport regulations.
