Convex is a backend platform designed to empower developers to build fast, reliable, and dynamic applications without needing a dedicated backend team. The company provides a full-stack app platform with integrated database, compute, and backend abstractions that enable developers and LLMs to move quickly while creating products that scale and remain maintainable.
As Head of Marketing, you will own Convex's marketing strategy and execution end-to-end, including positioning, product launches, content, community, events, and brand. The role reports directly to the founders (James and Jamie), who currently serve as de facto CMOs and bring strong, earned perspectives on the company's direction.
Key responsibilities include: defining what marketing motions matter most for the company stage and saying no to the rest; working directly with founders to refine their viewpoints into sharp, excellent marketing; building and leading a small marketing team over time while remaining hands-on with the work yourself; setting quality standards that reject hype and generic messaging in favor of substance; and shipping marketing that resonates authentically with skeptical, technical audiences.
The ideal candidate has a track record of marketing leadership at a technical or developer-facing company with measurable results. You should demonstrate genuine excellence in at least one marketing discipline (product marketing, brand, content, or community) and the judgment to hire people stronger than you in other areas. You need confidence to push back on founder conviction while executing well when they're right, comfort being hands-on (setting strategy and writing posts), and a reliable instinct for distinguishing substance from hype.
Critical to success: understanding developer audiences deeply, knowing how to prioritize ruthlessly across competing marketing surface area, thriving in a founder-led environment, marketing without buzzwords or overselling, remaining involved in the actual work of marketing, and bringing constructive energy and positivity to a startup environment. The company strongly prefers in-person work at the San Francisco office, though a few experienced remote arrangements exist.
