PlanetScale is seeking a Head of Events to own the strategy and execution of high-impact experiences connecting developers, engineering leaders, customers, and the tech community with the company's Postgres and Vitess/MySQL database platform.
You will own the end-to-end events strategy and portfolio, spanning owned developer experiences, conference presence, sponsored events, executive dinners, pop-up activations, meetups, field programs, and hybrid/digital formats. You'll set the creative and experiential bar across all touchpoints—booth design, merchandise, venue selection, food, and branding—ensuring every element reflects PlanetScale's brand and stands out in the market.
Key responsibilities include driving measurable outcomes in developer acquisition, product adoption, community growth, pipeline generation, and brand affinity. You'll define success metrics and hold the program accountable to them. You'll build and manage a global events calendar, evaluate and prioritize a disciplined portfolio, and own the events budget with clear ROI frameworks and financial discipline.
This is a highly hands-on role where you'll both define vision and drive the majority of execution yourself while building the foundation to scale the function over time. You'll manage vendors, agencies, venues, AV, and creative partners, innovate on event formats beyond traditional conference booths (hackathons, build-alongs, technical roundtables, unique activations), and operate in a matrixed environment influencing Sales, DevRel, Marketing, Brand, and leadership.
Required: 3+ years in events, experiential marketing, field marketing, Developer Relations, or developer community roles with meaningful ownership of strategy and execution. Experience working with developer and technical audiences, managing event budgets, producing owned events and conference presence, and strong project/vendor/stakeholder management skills. You must be willing to travel frequently (30%+ depending on calendar) and work evenings/weekends as needed. The role requires working from the San Francisco office at least 3 days per week.
Preferred: Prior experience in developer tools, infrastructure, or databases; Developer Relations or developer community building background; hybrid or digital-first event experience; existing relationships in the developer conference ecosystem; comfort with technical storytelling and collaboration with DevRel and Product teams.
