Exa is building a search engine for the AI era, having raised $250M Series C at a $2.2B valuation. The company powers agents, Fortune 500s, and AI labs with its Search API, disrupting an industry unchanged since the 1990s. The team of ~100 is based primarily in San Francisco and includes talent from Harvard, MIT, Meta, Google Research, and Y Combinator. As Head of Developer Relations, you will build and lead Exa's first dedicated DevRel function from the ground up. You own six interconnected areas: **Developer Community & Evangelism**: Shape how Exa appears in the developer world through community spaces, hackathons, meetups, conference talks, and open-source presence. Success is measured by active engagement and awareness in target segments. **Ecosystem & Integration Partnerships**: Drive technical partnerships embedding Exa into tools developers already use—agent frameworks, orchestration libraries, IDEs, and coding agents. Own the full lifecycle from initial conversation through shipped, documented, and maintained integration. **Developer Awareness & Advocacy**: Build programs converting users into advocates: champions, ambassadors, community contributors, and developers building impressive projects on Exa. Success is measured by unpaid third-party content and advocacy. **Developer Education & Demos**: Own reference applications, demos, workshops, and technical talks. Partner with Technical PMM on content strategy while you focus on live-delivered material. **Team Building**: Hire and lead a growing DevRel team, setting the bar for quality and ensuring the function scales beyond your direct involvement. **Product Feedback Loop**: Carry developer friction back to Product and Engineering—onboarding drop-off, API ergonomics, documentation gaps—ensuring fixes ship faster. You bring 6+ years in developer relations, developer marketing, or engineering with substantial public presence, including time at an API or developer platform company. You are a skilled communicator with talks, workshops, streams, or writing to demonstrate, plus a live demo you're proud of. You have engineering credibility with the AI stack—you build with LLMs, agents, and retrieval systems and can hold technical conversations with engineers. You have a track record building community from early stage, driving ecosystem partnerships to shipped code, and hiring or mentoring DevRel talent. You understand how to measure and defend DevRel's business value. Nice-to-have qualifications include open-source maintainer experience, background at a developer-adoption-driven company, existing presence in the AI/agent developer community, hackathon or developer conference experience, and prior professional software engineering experience.
