OpenAI's Hardware organization is seeking a Hardware Test Engineer to support the development and validation of AI-native silicon and system-level solutions for advanced AI workloads. This role focuses on ensuring the reliability, performance, and scalability of supercomputing hardware systems deployed in data centers.
You will design, implement, and execute comprehensive test plans for hardware components including processors, memory modules, custom accelerators, and high-speed interconnects. Key responsibilities include developing detailed test methodologies tailored to hardware validation, collaborating with hardware design, manufacturing, and firmware teams to identify and resolve issues affecting hardware, power, thermal, and high-speed interconnect performance, and performing in-depth debugging on complex hardware systems.
You will work extensively with high-speed links, particularly SerDes (Serializer/Deserializer) technology, assessing signal integrity, error rates, and overall link performance. The role requires hands-on use of advanced diagnostic and measurement tools including oscilloscopes, thermal test chambers, liquid cooling systems, VNAs, TDRs, and thermal cameras to capture performance metrics and analyze system behavior.
A significant portion of this role involves developing and maintaining automation scripts to streamline testing processes. Proficiency in Python and Bash, along with test automation frameworks, is highly desired. You will document test results, report defects, and communicate findings clearly to cross-functional teams.
The ideal candidate brings at least 10 years of industry experience, including hands-on hardware testing and validation for datacenter applications. You should have strong expertise in electrical, power, and thermal testing methodologies, familiarity with common interface protocols (SPI, I2C, USB, DDRx), and experience characterizing datacenter Ethernet interfaces. Experience with Cadence Allegro and system testing from board through data center level is expected. You are action-oriented, comfortable with ambiguity, and possess excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills with a strong desire to learn and share knowledge.
