August is building autonomous AI agents to transform how law firms deliver legal services. The company partners with mid-market law firms to automate knowledge work, enabling firms to scale and creating a new legal services business model. August's agents perform legal reasoning, research, and drafting tasks that already outperform lawyers in third-party evaluations.
As a Founding AI Product Engineer, you will design and scale production-grade agentic systems that perform complex legal tasks with expert-level reasoning. You'll work directly with founders, legal experts, and the product team to deploy AI systems in high-stakes workflows used by real lawyers globally.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and deploying agentic systems in Python to automate, evaluate, and scale end-to-end legal workflows
- Zero-to-one product development: rapidly prototyping, evaluating, integrating, and testing new product features in close partnership with customers and the legal team
- Developing AI-native workflows that implement streaming, long-running tasks, procedural UX, and other novel interaction patterns for AI-driven legal tasks
- Balancing state-of-the-art AI capabilities with pragmatic, production-ready solutions
You should have strong experience building with LLMs in production environments or advanced academic settings, demonstrated ability to ship quickly in early-stage environments while maintaining enterprise-grade software quality, and ideally deep understanding of infrastructure-layer systems (databases, cloud storage, etc.). Early-stage startup experience is valued. The role is based in New York with an in-person, collaborative team environment.
Compensation includes $140,000–$240,000 base salary plus founding-level equity. Benefits include medical insurance, flexible PTO, parental leave, health and wellness stipend, in-office perks, relocation support, and team-building events.
