Exa is building a search engine for the AI era, having raised $250M Series C at a $2.2B valuation. The company's Search API powers AI agents, Fortune 500 companies, and AI labs, disrupting an industry unchanged since the 1990s. The team of ~100 is based primarily in SF and includes talent from Harvard, MIT, Meta, Google Research, and Y Combinator.
As a Forward Deployed Engineer in APJ, you'll be the technical leader driving customer wins in the region. Partnered with an Account Executive, you own the entire technical sales cycle: discovery conversations with customer engineering teams, API solution design, building and delivering tailored demos and POCs, and handling technical objections. You'll be among the first GTM engineers in your region, helping define how Exa sells there rather than executing an existing playbook.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning technical discovery, solution design, demos, and POCs in partnership with your AE
- Identifying expansion opportunities within existing accounts and turning them into evaluations
- Building working prototypes on Exa's API tailored to customer use cases (agents, research, search, enrichment)
- Translating Exa's capabilities into compelling narratives for CTOs, engineers, and product leaders
- Serving as trusted technical advisor: knowing Exa's product, API, and problem-solving deeply; answering hard questions honestly; running rigorous evaluations; escalating to engineering when needed
- Feeding customer insights back to product and engineering teams to identify patterns
- Building reusable demos, integration patterns, and regional playbooks; representing Exa at technical events
- Supporting early customers through onboarding and initial implementation as the post-sales team scales
You bring 5+ years in customer-facing technical roles (solutions engineering, solutions architecture, or engineering with heavy customer exposure). You have technical depth with APIs and modern development (Python or TypeScript), can design integrations and build working demos, and are comfortable using AI-assisted tooling. You communicate clearly, adapt to different audiences, and are honest about knowledge gaps. You thrive in ambiguity, can run multiple evaluations in parallel, and prioritize what moves deals. You're familiar with the modern AI stack—LLMs, RAG, agents—and understand how customers evaluate it. You're based in the APJ region with willingness to travel for customer engagements.
Ideal candidates have owned technical evaluations at developer-platform or API-first companies, led engineers and want to move toward customers, are genuinely curious about AI and have built with LLMs, are energized by being first in a region, have run enterprise evaluations end-to-end, or speak additional regional languages.
