Rec is an AI-powered platform transforming how people book recreation activities—from tennis courts to swim lessons to rec leagues. The company sits at the intersection of a consumer product and an enterprise platform serving parks and recreation departments, sports facilities, and membership clubs. Founded by early Uber employees who later led teams at The Athletic and MasterClass, Rec combines builders from Google, Microsoft, Strava, Hipcamp, and Airbnb.
As Field Marketing Manager, you'll be the face of Rec at industry conferences and events where recreation professionals gather. This is a hands-on individual contributor role focused on converting booth traffic into qualified pipeline. You'll work major shows including NRPA (which moves to a different US city each fall), state conferences, regional workshops, and Rec's own event series (Rec Forward).
Key responsibilities:
- Work Rec's booth at every major show, opening conversations with prospects, qualifying buyers, and spending time on high-value leads rather than collecting badge scans.
- Deliver product demos yourself to recreation directors and operators, demonstrating deep product knowledge and the ability to answer skeptics' questions without escalation.
- Own event-sourced pipeline as your primary metric, with qualified meetings booked as the leading indicator and cost per qualified meeting as the efficiency check.
- Coordinate pre-event account targeting with Sales to identify high-value prospects, get meetings on the calendar before shows open, and ensure reps know exactly who they're meeting.
- Execute post-event follow-through within 72 hours, including your own follow-up, clean handoffs to sales reps, and honest assessment of event ROI 60–90 days later.
- Represent Rec at Rec Forward regional workshops, shaping invite lists and turning attendees into real conversations.
- Feed field intelligence back to Product Marketing, Sales, and Product teams—unfiltered buyer language and competitive insights gathered from the floor.
You'll report to Rec's Head of Growth Marketing. This is not an event operations role; you won't be chasing shipments or managing logistics. You'll be in the booth turning traffic into pipeline, then following up on Monday. Travel is roughly 40–50% during conference season (spring and fall), lighter in between, with some weekend show days. You'll work unsupervised on the road, deciding how to spend your time. The team is based in San Francisco; you'll join for onsites several times a year and should be within easy reach of a major airport.
The recreation industry is genuinely great—parks and recreation professionals run the programs and facilities that matter to communities. This role is explicitly not a corporate booth experience; the best field marketers in this space stay for the after-party and remember people by name a year later.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 2 to 5 years in field marketing, event marketing, or a BDR/AE role where you spent real time working booths. Experience executing is valued over program size.
- Ability to learn a product deeply and deliver demos to industry professionals without shallow talking points. Comfort demoing without looping in a solutions engineer.
- Skill at opening conversations with prospects and qualifying them naturally, without interrogation.
- Demonstrated ability to distinguish between a busy show day and a productive one, with examples of how you improved results on repeat conferences.
- Track record of being measured on pipeline or meetings rather than attendance and lead counts; preference for quality over vanity metrics.
- Ability to work well unsupervised, especially while on the road most weeks during season.
- Comfort with travel (40–50% during peak season) and willingness to work some weekends.
- Genuine interest in and respect for parks and recreation professionals and the industry.
- Bonus: vertical SaaS experience, public sector or procurement-driven sales background, existing relationships in the parks and recreation association world, or experience displacing legacy software.
