Materialize is a context engine for AI agents and applications that enables engineering teams to use SQL to transform operational data into real-time, trustworthy business views. The company serves enterprise customers including General Mills, Bilt Rewards, and Crane Worldwide Logistics, and is backed by Kleiner Perkins, Redpoint Ventures, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. As a Senior Field Engineer, you will be the technical lead of a customer-facing pod, partnering with Account Executives to drive successful evaluations, onboarding, and expansion. You own the full technical relationship from discovery through production and beyond, managing multiple strategic accounts simultaneously. This hybrid pre-sales and post-sales role combines architectural depth with customer engagement: you'll spend most of your time conducting discovery, delivering tailored demos, running proofs-of-concept, guiding customers to production, and identifying expansion opportunities. Key responsibilities include owning the complete technical lifecycle for a portfolio of enterprise accounts; leading complex discovery conversations with senior engineering stakeholders; designing and delivering tailored demos and time-boxed POVs with clear success criteria; serving as a trusted technical advisor translating Materialize's architecture into customer value; explaining positioning relative to alternatives like Flink, Snowflake, Databricks, and ClickHouse; partnering with Account Executives on deal strategy and MEDPICC execution; guiding customers from closed-won through first production workloads; providing ongoing architectural guidance and proactively surfacing expansion opportunities; and building repeatable assets that scale across the Field Engineering team, including demo environments, POV templates, discovery playbooks, competitive battlecards, and architectural reference materials. You should have 5+ years in customer-facing technical roles such as Field Engineering, Solutions Engineering, Solutions Architecture, or Technical Consulting, with demonstrated ownership of enterprise accounts at meaningful deal sizes. Required skills include strong understanding of modern data architectures (relational databases, event streaming, change data capture, microservices), deep SQL proficiency, familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Azure) and containerized environments, and experience building repeatable customer-facing assets. You should have a track record of driving technical wins on competitive enterprise deals, strong communication skills for both technical and executive audiences, and a structured, process-oriented mindset paired with startup flexibility. Background in data infrastructure, developer tools, or technical consulting is a plus, as is experience with real-time/streaming systems (Kafka, Flink, Spark) and scripting in Python, Go, or similar languages.
