NerdWallet is seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead the Consumer Credit Cards Marketplaces team, which owns web shopping experiences for one of the company's largest and most mission-critical verticals, serving millions of users making real financial decisions.
You will manage a team of 3-4 engineers while remaining deeply involved in the technical day-to-day. The team works across a modern full-stack: Next.js and React on the frontend, GraphQL federation and Node.js services on the backend, deployed on edge infrastructure built for scale and speed. Page performance and Core Web Vitals directly impact rankings, conversion, and revenue, so technical work here has visible, measurable business impact.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and mentoring a team of 3-4 engineers through 1-on-1s, career development, and performance management
- Setting technical direction, architecture, and ensuring high-quality delivery
- Contributing hands-on to the engineering excellence roadmap and product backlog
- Building out a robust AI developer harness and orchestrating agentic automations across the software lifecycle
- Developing your engineers' AI-era skills: effective prompting, spec-writing, and reviewing AI-generated code
- Collaborating with stakeholders across SEO, Paid Marketing, Product, Business Development, and Data & Analytics
- Driving technical initiatives that enhance performance, observability, scalability, security, and developer experience
- Contributing to platform stability through monitoring, troubleshooting, and incident management
You'll act as a pace setter and multiplier for the team, leading through influence and mutual respect rather than authority. The role reports to the Head of Engineering for Consumer Banking, Credit Cards & New Markets.
Required experience: 8+ years in software engineering with strong background as a hands-on Technical Lead. Expertise in TypeScript, React, and Node.js. Strong experience with Next.js, understanding of web performance and Core Web Vitals. Experience architecting backend APIs and microservices. Knowledge of SQL and NoSQL databases, cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure), CI/CD pipelines, Docker, and Kubernetes. Understanding of security and compliance in financial services. Experience with observability and running production applications at scale. Hands-on experience with AI development tools and agentic workflows.
