GitLab is seeking a Director of Social Media to lead the company's global social media strategy and shape how GitLab engages with customers, users, contributors, candidates, and industry audiences across all social channels. This is a player-coach role combining strategic leadership with hands-on execution.
You will own the full social media function including strategy, budget, team development, tooling, and business results. Two Social Media Managers report to the head of corporate communications and work with you on a dotted-line basis; you'll set their strategic direction, raise editorial standards, and develop them as practitioners through goal-setting, feedback, and career development.
Key responsibilities include: leading GitLab's global organic social strategy and channel plans; owning YouTube strategy end-to-end (channel architecture, video programming, optimization, growth); partnering with Growth Marketing on paid social alignment; developing audience-focused campaigns supporting company, product, brand, and talent goals; managing the social budget, tooling stack, and vendor relationships; building cross-functional collaboration with Marketing, Communications, Product, Sales, and Talent Acquisition; establishing measurement frameworks and KPIs; leading creator, influencer, and advocacy programs; owning the employee advocacy program; supporting executive social presence; and applying AI tools thoughtfully across social workflows.
You'll use social listening, audience insights, and performance data to inform strategy and broader marketing decisions. The role requires someone who has already led and grown social practitioners, with the ability to influence across the organization and set clear priorities while staying close enough to the work to write, build, and ship alongside the team. GitLab is an all-remote, asynchronous organization, so you'll need to build processes that support effective collaboration in that environment.
