Altos Labs, a top-ranked biotech company focused on cell rejuvenation to reverse disease and aging, seeks a Director or Senior Director of Machine Learning for Biology to lead its Institute of Computing (IoC). This is a hands-on leadership role combining strategic vision with deep technical expertise. You will partner with IoC leadership to define Altos' technical agenda, identifying critical biological questions where machine learning can drive breakthroughs in cell health and resilience. You'll lead a team of ML scientists and engineers while remaining deeply engaged in technical work—guiding method choices, de-risking ML projects, and mentoring team members on the most ambitious programs. Key responsibilities include: co-defining strategic priorities for ML investments across the institute; building partnerships across functions; leading and growing an ML team while staying hands-on in technical trenches; providing guidance on project design and ML-for-biology best practices; mentoring and developing talent; and influencing technical direction across matrixed teams. You bring deep expertise in state-of-the-art AI/ML methods applied to biological data (single-cell, perturbation-response, spatial, sequence). Specific domains include: reasoning and open-ended learning for hypothesis generation; large-scale pretraining and foundation model fine-tuning (RL, distillation, alignment); multimodal generative and predictive modeling (normalizing flows, diffusion, LLMs) for out-of-distribution generalization; and hybrid interpretable approaches (anchor models, energy-based methods) for target identification and biological tasks. You have a proven track record leading innovative biological ML projects to success, foreseeing and mitigating failure modes at scale. You think strategically while executing with pace, balance creative exploration with resource allocation, and stay current with computational biology and AI trends. A PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or related quantitative field is required, along with relevant biotech or industry leadership experience.
