Metropolis Technologies is seeking a Director of Engineering Operations & Strategy to lead technology strategy, operational excellence, and strategic problem-solving across the engineering organization. You will operate with high autonomy, managing a $50M–$100M+ engineering budget while partnering directly with senior leadership on critical initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own shared engineering processes including hiring workflows, onboarding, and training to maintain consistency as the organization scales
- Solve deeply complex, multifaceted operational challenges by delivering simple, actionable solutions independently
- Manage and coordinate a multi-million-dollar P&L budget aligned with corporate objectives
- Own hardware and service forecasting for critical vendors (AWS, Twilio, etc.), maintaining visibility into spend trends and proactively flagging risks and opportunities
- Lead emerging strategic decisions for engineering—M&A due diligence, major vendor migrations, and high-stakes initiatives—in close partnership with executives
- Build alignment across senior leadership on multi-stakeholder decisions involving complex or high-risk initiatives
- Keep teams unblocked and moving rapidly, demonstrating comfort with incomplete information as long as direction is sound
- Break down cross-functional silos using curiosity and formal methodologies; challenge assumptions and drive alignment
- Forecast operational trends and deliver proactive strategic recommendations
- Own all vendor management across engineering, from contract negotiation and renewals to performance accountability
The role requires someone who thrives in uncertainty, takes full ownership of outcomes, and combines hands-on technical grounding with high-intensity strategic experience. You will work on-site at least four days per week to foster collaboration and innovation.
Requirements:
- 6+ years in high-intensity, rigorous environments
- 2+ years of hands-on working experience in software engineering or similar engineering roles
- Demonstrated history of relentlessly solving hard problems; intensity often comes from top-tier management consulting, investment banking, or strategic finance backgrounds, but track record of outworking problems matters most
- Proven experience leading a strategic function with significant autonomy, managing resources, and taking full ownership of organizational outcomes
- Exceptional ability to build trust with technical teams and influence without formal authority
- Experience owning meaningful budget or resource decisions within high-growth or complex organizations, with bias toward action over perfect information
- Track record of operating effectively in fast-moving, high-ambiguity environments and making sound decisions without complete data
- Exceptional ability to synthesize complex operational or technical concepts into clear rationale for senior and C-level stakeholders
- Skilled at translating high-level business goals into concrete execution plans accounting for broad organizational impact
- Proven excellence leveraging AI tools and frameworks to optimize technology operations, technical evaluations, and cross-functional workflows
Plus factors (not required):
- MBA from a top-tier business program
- Engineering degree
- Experience in high-growth technology scale-ups or pre-IPO environments
- Direct involvement in M&A tech due diligence, corporate restructuring, or integration strategy
- Experience with modern engineering workflows, cloud platforms (AWS), or AI tooling
