Prefect is hiring a Developer Relations Engineer to own how developers learn to build with Prefect, an orchestration and agentic platform used for mission-critical workloads. You'll report to the Chief Growth Officer and drive developer education through reference implementations, technical content, documentation, and public presence.
In your first year, you will ship production-grade reference implementations (MCP servers, gateway configurations, agentic workflows) that developers copy into production. You'll teach skeptical senior engineers about agentic workflows through demos, posts, talks, and video while the product is still being defined. You'll own the technical side of video content creation, leveraging Prefect's in-house recording studio to produce watchable technical builds for YouTube, LinkedIn, X, and TikTok.
You'll improve developer experience by being the first user of Prefect's tools—building with them before customers do, filing issues, submitting docs PRs, and fixing examples. You'll represent Prefect publicly at conferences, PyAI events, livestreams, podcasts, and in MCP and Python AI communities as a practitioner. You'll bring field feedback directly to the engineering team, identifying what confuses users, what breaks, and what's missing.
This is a generalist role by design. You'll write Python, appear on camera, review documentation PRs, and file bugs you discover—often in the same day. You'll work directly with product and engineering teams while the agentic platform is still being shaped.
Must-haves: 6+ years writing software professionally (strong Python desirable); a public body of technical work (repos, posts, docs, talks, videos); hands-on experience building with LLMs and agents (MCP servers, tool calling, agent frameworks, retrieval); comfort on camera and stage; ability to run as a team of one, choosing what to build and shipping independently.
Nice-to-haves: maintaining or substantially contributing to popular open-source projects; existing developer audience (YouTube, X, Twitch, newsletter); data engineering or orchestration background (Prefect, Dagster, Airflow, dbt); familiarity with enterprise governance topics (SSO, RBAC, audit logs, PII).
Not for you if: you're looking to stop writing code; you want to be a thought leader without shipped code; you need a stable roadmap (one product you'd explain is being designed in real time).
Remote-first, continental US. Expect travel for events and a few days per quarter in the recording studio. Slight preference for candidates near New York or Bay Area, but not required.
