Exa is building a search engine for the AI era, having raised $250M Series C at a $2.2B valuation. The company powers agents, Fortune 500s, and AI labs with its Search API, disrupting an industry unchanged since the 1990s. The team of ~100 is based primarily in SF and includes talent from Harvard, MIT, Meta, Google Research, and YC.
As Developer Advocate, you'll be an engineer who builds with Exa's API and inspires other developers to do the same. Your primary responsibilities include:
**Building & Demos**: Own a growing library of reference applications, integration examples, and demos showcasing Exa's capabilities. Success is measured by usage, forks, and developer adoption driven by your work.
**Technical Communication**: Represent Exa at conference talks, meetups, workshops, hackathons, and streams. You'll teach both in-person and on video, converting attention into first API calls.
**Community Engagement**: Be a genuinely helpful presence in developer forums and communities where users gather. Answer questions, unblock developers, and build trust through quality support—not promotional astroturfing.
**Integration Work**: Build and maintain integrations with frameworks and tools developers use, partnering with the Head of DevRel on partner relationships.
**Developer Feedback**: Carry friction back to Product and Engineering with specificity—what broke, where developers got stuck, what new users abandon. Your reports drive product fixes.
You'll work closely with the Head of DevRel on community programs and with Technical PMM on repurposing your work into SEO/AEO content.
**Requirements**: 3+ years as a software engineer, developer advocate, or mix, with code to show. Real fluency in the AI stack (LLMs, agents, retrieval). Public artifacts (repos, talks, tutorials, side projects). Strong live communication and genuine enthusiasm for helping developers. Comfort working in public and taking technical criticism. Daily use of AI tooling with informed opinions on its gaps.
**Nice-to-haves**: Open source contributions, API-first/developer tools company experience, reputation in AI developer community, workshop/hackathon mentoring, skills in video/writing/design.
The role is in-person at either SF HQ or the New York office. Exa offers premium health coverage, fertility/family planning support, 16 weeks paid parental leave, daily meals, visa sponsorship, and a collaborative, high-agency culture.
