Basis is seeking a Controller to build financial systems and operating foundations for the company's next growth phase. You will report to the Head of Finance and own the integrity of accounting operations, ensuring leadership has clear, timely understanding of company finances. What makes this role distinctive is the opportunity to apply AI to accounting itself. Basis's finance function serves as a proving ground for the future the company is building—a place to apply AI to real accounting work, learn where it creates leverage, and set high standards for speed, accuracy, control, and judgment. You'll bring an AI-forward mindset to function operations, redesigning workflows across close, reconciliations, spend monitoring, reporting, and core work. You'll determine where AI can own work, where human review matters, and how systems remain explainable and auditable at scale. You'll partner closely with Product and Engineering, bringing practitioner perspective to problems customers solve and turning internal learnings into better systems, sharper product insight, and credible examples of AI-native accounting functions. This high-ownership role combines technical accounting depth with systems thinking, curiosity, and strong business judgment. You should enjoy detail work while defining how modern finance operates at an AI company. Required: 6–12 years progressive accounting/finance experience with meaningful ownership of accounting operations at high-growth companies. Strong technical accounting knowledge across financial reporting, revenue recognition, accruals, capitalization, and equity. Systems mindset to translate messy processes into clear workflows, reliable data, thoughtful controls, and scalable rhythms. Experience building systems for accounts payable, procurement, expense management, purchasing approvals, vendor commitments, and spend reporting. Strong analytical judgment and ability to explain financial changes and business implications. Ability to partner effectively with technical and nontechnical teams. Preferred: Experience evolving accounting from founder-led or manual processes into scalable, well-controlled functions. AI or infrastructure cost fluency (cloud, compute, model, data, infrastructure costs). Experience building procurement, approval, vendor-management, cost-allocation, or expense systems from scratch. Success metrics include scalable close process with reliable reporting, real spend visibility by vendor/team/category/product/customer, thoughtful cost controls with clear ownership and approval paths, revenue integrity flowing cleanly into billing and recognition, systems that compound with scale, and audit/compliance readiness.
