Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Senior Finance Analyst to support the R&D and Technology Development teams. In this business partner role, you will translate experimental roadmaps into detailed budgets, track project spend against technical milestones, and provide financial visibility to leadership navigating real technical uncertainty.
You will work directly with scientists and engineers to understand the financial implications of their research programs, ensuring accurate cost tracking and financial treatment of R&D activities. This role requires the ability to bridge the gap between technical complexity and financial clarity, helping leaders make informed decisions in an environment where outcomes are inherently uncertain.
Key responsibilities include:
- Partnering with R&D leadership to develop and manage budgets for experimental programs
- Tracking project expenditures against planned milestones and technical objectives
- Providing financial analysis and reporting to support decision-making
- Understanding and applying appropriate financial treatment for research activities
- Communicating financial insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
The ideal candidate combines strong financial acumen with genuine curiosity about fusion technology and the underlying science. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, innovative environment where technical uncertainty is inherent and financial planning must adapt accordingly. Experience with R&D budgeting, project-based accounting, or working in technical/scientific organizations is highly valued.
