OpenAI seeks a Brand Strategist to lead positioning and brand strategy for ChatGPT across a rapidly evolving market. This is a senior, hands-on role that spans positioning, audience strategy, product storytelling, and creative direction.
You will set the market direction for how ChatGPT is positioned and shape its broader narrative across products, audiences, and moments. You'll develop differentiated positions grounded in product capabilities, customer needs, category dynamics, and competitive gaps. The role involves leading a portfolio of high-impact brand and product marketing initiatives—identifying which questions matter most, establishing priorities, and helping teams make clear strategic choices.
Using market and audience insights, you'll influence product and marketing decisions by connecting customer needs, cultural shifts, competitive dynamics, and technical tradeoffs to actionable recommendations. You'll help new products land by translating complex capabilities into compelling launch narratives, demos, and creative work. The work is hands-on: you'll write positioning briefs, build prototypes, shape ideas quickly, and stay close to execution alongside creative, product, product marketing, research, design, and communications partners.
You'll identify underserved opportunities—audiences, use cases, or product openings—and make the case for them, defining success metrics and assembling the right teams. You'll build scalable frameworks for positioning, audience strategy, narrative development, and creative briefing that help teams make stronger, more consistent decisions. Staying close to culture is essential: you'll track how AI interacts with creators, communities, internet behavior, and emerging formats, distinguishing meaningful shifts from noise.
Throughout, you'll use AI tools in your own work and help others learn faster. You'll raise the standard of work around you by bringing clarity to competing priorities, challenging assumptions constructively, mentoring peers, and helping senior stakeholders reach decisions and sustain momentum.
Ideal candidates have 10+ years of brand or product strategy experience, with a track record setting positioning and marketing strategy across product portfolios or major initiatives—not just individual campaigns. You're deeply immersed in AI, use ChatGPT or similar tools regularly, and can demonstrate something you've made or improved with them. You have strong strategic and creative judgment, can identify the central choice in complex problems, and recognize genuinely good work. You connect audience and market insight with product capabilities to influence senior stakeholders. You're deeply connected to culture and can explain why ideas, behaviors, communities, or formats matter beyond surface trends. You like doing the work yourself—writing, prototyping, giving creative direction, and staying involved through delivery. You've independently led multiple complex cross-functional workstreams and can point to consequential decisions you've resolved and meaningful work you've shipped. You build frameworks that improve quality and consistency beyond your own projects, and you raise the strategic bar for others through clear thinking, direct feedback, and mentorship. You thrive in ambiguity, notice gaps, define the right problems, make sound decisions with incomplete information, and change direction without losing momentum.
