OpenAI's Government AI Architect team partners with public sector organizations to deploy AI solutions that advance critical missions. As an Applied AI Architect, you will be the senior technical owner for a named portfolio of government customers, serving as the primary technical counterpart to their leadership teams.
You will shape each customer's AI strategy and guide their journey from pre-sales discovery through deployment, adoption, and measurable mission impact. You own the technical account plan across ChatGPT Enterprise, the OpenAI API, and agentic AI solutions. Working in partnership with Account Directors, you translate mission priorities into a focused use-case portfolio, an actionable adoption roadmap, and a clear path to durable customer value.
Key responsibilities include serving as the primary technical advisor for a named portfolio of public sector customers and prospects; partnering with Account Directors on account strategy while owning technical milestones and adoption priorities; leading discovery with agency leaders and technical teams to identify and prioritize use cases tied to mission outcomes; developing comprehensive Applied AI Architectures spanning models, applications, data, integration, security, and deployment; guiding customers through technical evaluations, demonstrations, and proofs of value; helping customers navigate security, compliance, and governance requirements specific to the public sector; maintaining a focused use-case portfolio with clear success measures and delivery needs; developing trusted relationships with CIOs, CTOs, CISOs, and other stakeholders; coordinating support from deployment, security, and specialist teams; tracking adoption, usage, and measurable mission impact; and sharing customer insights with Product and Engineering teams.
Ideal candidates have significant experience in customer-facing technical roles such as solutions architecture, solutions engineering, or technical account leadership. You should have guided complex organizations from technical evaluation through production adoption, worked with government agencies or contractors, and understand how mission priorities, security, compliance, and procurement shape technology adoption. Strong software and cloud architecture foundations are essential, including APIs, distributed systems, data integration, identity, and security. You should understand modern AI systems, frontier models, agentic applications, and enterprise AI workflows. Experience with Python or JavaScript, ability to prototype and explain technical tradeoffs, and expertise developing technical account plans are valuable. Public sector mission expertise is a meaningful plus.
The role is based in Washington, DC with a hybrid work model of three days in the office per week. OpenAI offers relocation assistance to new employees.
