The AML & Prohibited Activities Investigations Analyst role sits within the first line of defence (1LOD) operations team, responsible for monitoring customer activity to prevent and detect sanctions violations, money laundering, terrorism financing, tax evasion, bribery, corruption, money mule activity, and fraud.
Key responsibilities include:
**Transaction Monitoring & Alert Review:**
- Monitor and investigate alerts from automated transaction monitoring and sanctions screening systems
- Conduct risk-based reviews of customer accounts and transaction histories to identify suspicious patterns deviating from normal behavior
- Synthesize information from KYC/CDD profiles, public records, adverse media, and internal data
- Assess transactional activity against financial crime typologies across various payment types and products
- Draft comprehensive reports on findings before discounting alerts or recommending suspicious activity reporting
- Contact customers via email, chat, or phone to gather contextual information without alerting them
- Liaise with partner bank representatives on financial crime investigations
**Suspicious Activity Reporting (SAR):**
- Draft and present detailed, well-reasoned SAR recommendations to filing experts
- Construct clear, concise, defensible narratives outlining suspicious activity, investigative steps, and rationale
- Compile supporting documentation and evidence for audit purposes
**Sanctions Screening:**
- Analyze potential sanctions hits against international lists (OFAC, EU, UN, HMT) for cross-border payments
- Apply risk-based approaches to differentiate true matches from false positives using phonetic analysis, aliases, and supporting data
Required qualifications: Strong understanding of financial crime typologies, knowledge of UK and European regulatory frameworks, exceptional English communication skills (written and verbal), ability to apply expert judgment on SAR filing decisions, and proactive approach to financial crime prevention.
