Rare Candy is a fast-growing marketplace and mobile app for trading-card collectors, featuring AI-powered card scanning, collection management tools, and digital pack opening (Instapacks) for Pokémon, MTG, Lorcana, One Piece, and more. The company has achieved 10x revenue growth in the last six months, is profitable, and is scaling from a 10-person product team.
You will join as a Web Engineer reporting to the CTO, responsible for building and improving the web experiences that collectors use to discover products, manage collections, shop drops, and open Instapacks. This is a hands-on product engineering role with meaningful ownership—you'll take features from idea through production, make thoughtful technical decisions, and own how your work performs in collectors' hands.
Key responsibilities include:
- Build responsive web experiences using React, TypeScript, and modern tooling
- Develop maintainable interfaces and reusable components
- Integrate with GraphQL APIs and collaborate with backend engineers on data contracts
- Own features end-to-end: technical planning, implementation, testing, rollout, and iteration
- Ensure accessibility, performance, and cross-device/browser compatibility
- Investigate and resolve production bugs
- Work closely with product and design to balance user needs, technical constraints, and timelines
- Contribute thoughtful code reviews and communicate clearly about progress and tradeoffs
Success milestones: By day 30, you'll have the web app running locally and shipped your first meaningful improvements. By day 90, you'll independently deliver well-scoped features. By year-end, you'll own important areas of the web product and have meaningfully improved the collector experience.
The role emphasizes a fast-moving startup environment where you help shape solutions, take responsibility for outcomes, and work in a high-trust, low-ego team that ships fast and celebrates wins.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 3–5 years of web engineering experience with shipped production features
- Strong proficiency in React, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
- Ability to take a feature from product brief or design through implementation and release independently
- Experience with GraphQL or REST APIs, data fetching, caching, and client-side state management
- Demonstrated ability to build responsive, accessible interfaces with attention to detail
- Competence in component design, rendering behavior, and performance tradeoffs
- Experience writing tests and debugging across browser, network, and API layers
- Clear communication of technical tradeoffs; strong collaboration with designers, product, and engineers
- Comfort in fast-moving startups with shifting priorities
- Knowledge of or passion for trading-card or collector communities (collecting, playing, market fluency, or similar domain expertise preferred)
