General Matter is a venture-backed nuclear fuel enrichment company (incubated by Founders Fund, backed by top-tier VCs) building the world's lowest-cost uranium enrichment services in the US. The company is focused on restoring America's nuclear fuel production capability to power AI, advanced manufacturing, and critical industries.
You will develop real-time control software, motor drive firmware, and device drivers that command test stands and production systems. This role bridges real-time embedded engineering and motor control, requiring you to turn control algorithms into deterministic, fault-tolerant code that closes high-rate control loops, drives power electronics, coordinates distributed actuators over fieldbus networks, and acquires high-speed signals from scientific instrumentation. You will help define the real-time architecture, driver standards, and hardware interfaces of mission-critical embedded systems across R&D, manufacturing/test, and plant operations, working hands-on from early prototypes through deployed systems.
Key responsibilities include:
- Architect and develop deterministic, safety-critical control software on real-time Linux (PREEMPT_RT) and embedded microcontroller/DSP targets
- Define real-time architecture, driver standards, and hardware interface conventions across R&D, test, and production
- Implement and optimize motor control algorithms (field-oriented control, sensorless control, closed-loop current and torque control)
- Develop low-level drive firmware for PWM generation, synchronized ADC sampling, current/voltage sensing, and motor feedback interfaces
- Implement estimation, monitoring, and protection functions (state/fault estimation, overcurrent/overvoltage protection)
- Build and maintain industrial fieldbus masters and stacks (EtherCAT, CAN/CANopen, EtherNet/IP) for hard real-time distributed control
- Write drivers and interfaces for scientific instrumentation, sensors, and data acquisition hardware (SPI, I2C, serial, USB, PCIe, Ethernet)
- Own software from development through deployment, building automated build, test, and validation infrastructure (SIL/HIL frameworks)
- Perform safety analyses and validate control logic for deterministic behavior and functional safety
- Contribute to integrated system testing, commissioning, and continuous improvement of production equipment
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related STEM field
- 5+ years of experience developing embedded, real-time, or low-level systems software
- Evidence of exceptional ability (prior projects, portfolio, completed products)
- Strong, production-level experience in C, C++, or Rust
- Hands-on experience implementing motor control firmware (field-oriented control, sensorless control, PWM, closed-loop current control)
- Solid grounding in control fundamentals (linear systems, discrete-time control, digital filtering, state estimation) with ability to implement, tune, and debug on real hardware
- Hands-on experience with real-time systems and hardware/software integration; strong understanding of deterministic timing, interrupt latency, concurrency, and device driver development
- Ability to perform trade studies and make clear recommendations from first principles
Preferred experience includes: power electronics and inverters; motor-control MCUs/DSPs (TI C2000, STM32); model-based design (MATLAB/Simulink); Python for analysis and tooling; advanced estimation and control (observers, Kalman filtering); industrial fieldbus protocols (EtherCAT, CANopen); real-time Linux (PREEMPT_RT, Xenomai); kernel/driver development; low-level protocol debugging; fault-tolerant distributed control systems; background in safety-critical or regulated industrial environments (nuclear, chemical, energy, aerospace, robotics, semiconductor).
Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.
