Gusto is seeking a highly experienced quantitative UX researcher to lead research strategy across the organization and directly inform executive-level product investment decisions. This is a Staff/Principal-level individual contributor role (equivalent to Senior Staff at peer companies) embedded within Gusto's Design Organization, which comprises over 70 creative professionals focused on empowering small businesses.
In this role, you will set and drive a quantitative research roadmap across R&D, prioritizing studies that reduce risk on major product bets. You'll develop psychometric frameworks and validated measurement scales to assess how customers experience Gusto's AI features, own the organization's quantitative methods approach, and partner closely with Data Science to combine behavioral, attitudinal, and sentiment data into coherent customer insights.
Key responsibilities include building and maintaining clear segmentation of ideal customer profiles, designing scaled usability measurement programs with large-sample benchmarking and competitive comparisons, and elevating Gusto's quantitative research practice through mentorship, shared tools, and AI-native workflows.
You'll work with senior leadership including VPs and above, bringing clarity to ambiguous, high-stakes decisions. The research team is small and embedded within product areas, with a strong emphasis on making customer learning accessible across the organization through self-serve tools and resources.
Gusto serves over 500,000 small businesses nationwide, handling payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR. The company has teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs). AI fluency is expected across all roles.
