OpenAI's Youth team is building AI products and experiences designed specifically for young people, with a focus on safety, learning, and education. The team works on foundational protections like age assurance and always-on safety systems, as well as new learning experiences and tools for K–12 schools, educators, and classrooms.
As a Staff Product Designer, you will shape how young people safely engage with AI and help define OpenAI's emerging education experiences. This is a highly generative role spanning both immediate product needs and ambitious zero-to-one opportunities—from age-appropriate safety systems to collaborative learning tools.
You'll establish an exceptionally high standard for craft across OpenAI's youth and education experiences. Your responsibilities include leading end-to-end design for products that help young people use AI safely and productively, designing clear and age-appropriate experiences for sensitive interactions like age assurance, and shaping zero-to-one K–12 experiences for school districts, educators, and classrooms. You'll turn emerging ideas into compelling concepts, prototypes, and high-fidelity product experiences that teams can evaluate and build.
You'll partner closely with research, engineering, product, safety, policy, and design teams to balance user needs, technical capabilities, and responsible deployment. You'll conduct research with young people, educators, and institutional partners to understand their needs, and develop reusable patterns and principles that create coherence across the growing youth and education product area.
This role requires exceptional interaction and visual design craft paired with deep product and systems thinking. You should have led substantial, ambiguous, or zero-to-one product areas and can help shape both vision and execution. You'll design thoughtful experiences for sensitive, high-trust, and safety-critical contexts while keeping products engaging and intuitive. You'll navigate the needs of multiple audiences—young people, educators, administrators, and institutional partners—and communicate clearly to build alignment across disciplines while remaining hands-on throughout product development.
