Tailscale is seeking a Senior UX Researcher to join their design team in a hybrid research and research operations role. You will conduct usability and quality-validation testing while building and maintaining the systems that make research repeatable and scalable across the organization.
In the research function, you will own the full study lifecycle—from participant recruiting and study scoping through analysis, insights communication, and cross-functional collaboration. You'll evaluate shipped features, validate design assumptions, and expand testing capacity. Over time, you will grow from executing studies identified by others toward owning research direction for specific product areas. You'll also enable product teams (designers, PMs, engineers) to conduct their own research by coaching them through study design, helping interpret results, and building reusable templates and guides.
In research operations, you will maintain and improve the research library—standardizing documentation, managing tags and organization, and ensuring past studies remain discoverable and actionable. You'll manage the research tool stack, including templates, guides, and vendor relationships. You'll handle day-to-day logistics: managing the participant panel, processing compensation and receipts, tracking budgets, and coordinating vendor renewals with legal and finance.
You'll report to the design manager and partner closely with the current staff researcher (who leads strategic research direction), product designers, product managers, and engineers. The role offers significant autonomy, particularly in operations work, with flexibility as the organization evolves. Initially, you'll focus on clearing a backlog of studies with emphasis on one large ongoing project.
