The Underwriting Lead role is a hands-on position responsible for making high-quality credit decisions, establishing consistent underwriting operations, and scaling credit policy into a repeatable customer experience. This is a critical role bridging tactical underwriting execution with strategic process improvement.
Key responsibilities include:
- Underwriting new accounts and material exposure changes using financial statements, bank/transaction data, bureau information, and internal signals
- Preparing clear credit memos and recommendations, exercising delegated authority, and escalating complex cases per policy
- Owning application queue health metrics including document collection, decision turnaround, rework, and escalation tracking
- Driving consistent decision documentation, reason codes, approval conditions, and exception tracking with regular calibration reviews
- Cross-functional partnership with Product, Engineering, Data, Fraud, Legal/Compliance, and Operations to build effective decisioning and audit trails
- Training and coaching future underwriting team members while creating durable procedures and decision standards
Success is measured on decision quality and risk performance, turnaround time and queue metrics, policy adherence and SLA compliance, and reduction in decision variance while maintaining control integrity.
The ideal candidate has 5+ years of commercial credit underwriting experience, preferably with SMBs, commercial cards, working-capital products, or fintech lending. Strong financial analysis skills, sound judgment in ambiguous situations, experience with credit policy and delegated authority frameworks, and excellent cross-functional communication are essential.
