BETA Technologies is revolutionizing electric aviation through sustainable aircraft development. This Composites Tooling Engineer role is a hands-on position responsible for designing, validating, and continuously improving the molds, fixtures, cure tooling, and supporting equipment that enable safe, repeatable, and scalable composite-part production.
You will design and release composite manufacturing tooling including molds, trim and drill fixtures, assembly fixtures, inspection fixtures, caul plates, and handling equipment. Working from requirements capture through concept selection, CAD design, drawing release, supplier support, first-article validation, production handoff, and continuous improvement, you'll own the complete tooling lifecycle. Your designs will account for part geometry, tolerances, thermal behavior, demold strategy, ergonomics, durability, inspection access, and production rate.
Key responsibilities include partnering with Design Engineering to provide design-for-manufacturability feedback on tooling splits, draft, ply drops, core transitions, and bondline control. You'll work directly with production-floor technicians to observe tooling use, resolve issues rapidly, reduce variation and cycle time, and improve safety and ergonomics. You'll create and maintain tooling drawings, bills of material, usage instructions, inspection criteria, and maintenance requirements.
You'll define and support tooling acceptance activities including dimensional verification, scan-to-CAD comparison, fit checks, and first-part inspection. Coordination with internal shops and external suppliers on fabrication approach, quoting, inspection, and delivery is essential. You'll support composite process development and scale-up across layup, debulk, cure, bonding, trimming, drilling, and assembly operations, and identify cost, capacity, quality, and throughput opportunities.
Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Aerospace, or related engineering discipline (or equivalent experience), 3+ years of engineering experience in manufacturing including production tooling or composite equipment design, proficiency in professional CAD (NX, CATIA, SolidWorks, or equivalent), demonstrated ability to independently design complex multi-piece tooling, working knowledge of GD&T and tolerance analysis, ability to interpret part models and composite ply definitions, experience in aerospace composite structures or high-reliability regulated manufacturing, familiarity with dimensional inspection methods (CMM, laser scanning), strong cross-functional communication skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a hands-on manufacturing environment.
Desirable qualifications include knowledge of composite processes (prepreg layup, resin infusion, compression molding, wet layup, out-of-autoclave curing), experience with machining, CNC programming, additive manufacturing, experience designing high-temperature cure tooling, familiarity with PLM/PDM and change management, and working knowledge of Python, MATLAB, or VBA for engineering automation.
