Overview.ai is a full-stack AI computer vision company deploying GPU-powered cameras and edge inference systems on manufacturing production lines worldwide. The company solves inspection problems previously unsolvable with traditional machine vision, serving customers across electronics, automotive, connectors, batteries, packaging, and other industries.
You will be the Technical Sales Engineer for Vision Applications in the Shenzhen region, responsible for solving the hardest optical and lighting challenges in manufacturing inspection. This is a vision-first role combining deep technical expertise with field execution and customer ownership.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Vision Strategy & Optics/Lighting Design: You will design and iterate imaging solutions for challenging inspection problems. This includes selecting and tuning lighting strategies (bright field, dark field, coaxial, dome, diffuse, structured light, backlight, multisource setups); managing polarization and glare suppression; optimizing strobed vs. continuous exposure for high-speed scenarios; and deploying advanced 2.5D photometric techniques. You will select appropriate lenses and optical elements (telecentric, macro, high-NA, long working distance, Scheimpflug tilt, filters, polarizers, diffusers, beam splitters, mirrors/prisms). You will push beyond visible light when needed (IR, NIR, SWIR, multispectral, fluorescence approaches) and diagnose complex vision failure modes (reflectivity, transparency, moiré, aliasing, lens flare, vibration blur, rolling shutter artifacts, shadowing, contamination drift). The expectation is that you can often identify a workable imaging approach by examining the part and environment, then validate it rapidly in the field.
Project Ownership & Deployment: You will own customer deployments end-to-end—planning, on-site execution, training, and follow-through. You will drive fast iteration cycles from image capture through lighting/lens adjustments to production-ready validation. You will train customer teams (process, quality, operations) on daily operation, troubleshooting, re-validation after maintenance, and image quality stability. You will create clear documentation and "golden configs" to accelerate future rollouts.
Competitive Expertise & Go-to-Market: You will maintain working knowledge of the machine vision ecosystem and competitors (Cognex, Keyence, HALCON/MVTec, Hikrobot/Hikvision, others). You will participate in pre-sales technical discovery, help position Overview.ai intelligently, identify where incumbents fail, and propose imaging strategies that maximize AI performance. You will feed market intelligence back to product and go-to-market teams.
WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS:
You'll solve the hardest vision problems in the world—problems that break traditional machine vision. You'll work with cutting-edge AI on real factory floors and see immediate impact on yield and downtime. You'll operate with high autonomy and trust, leading technical strategy end-to-end. You'll compete against incumbents and help Overview.ai win deals through superior optical solutioning. The role offers constant variety: new production lines, new parts, new optical phenomena.
SUCCESS METRICS:
- Customers trust you as the vision expert who solves "impossible" inspections
- You consistently deliver stable, repeatable imaging configurations that enable excellent AI performance
- You help win deals by out-thinking incumbents and demonstrating superior solutioning
- You convert one-off optical victories into reusable playbooks, reference setups, and standards
REQUIREMENTS:
- Deep, hands-on machine vision experience with heavy emphasis on lighting and optics (not just camera setup)
- Track record solving difficult inspections in production environments (reflective/transparent surfaces, tight geometry, high speed, variable presentation)
- Strong practical knowledge of the lighting and lens landscape; understanding of tradeoffs and failure modes, not just catalog names
- Ability to operate independently in factories and own outcomes
- Mandarin fluency (native or near-native)
- Working English for collaboration with global engineering/product teams
- Strong communication skills to explain optical strategies clearly to customers and teammates
STRONG PREFERENCES:
- Experience building vision solutions across multiple industries (electronics, automotive, connectors, batteries, packaging, etc.)
- Experience with advanced optical methods (telecentric, polarization, structured light, multi-angle, spectral techniques)
- Comfort running field experiments quickly and methodically (hypothesis → test → iterate)
