Icarus is building solar-powered aircraft that operate at 60,000 feet for weeks at a time, establishing persistent presence in the stratosphere. As the company's first dedicated technical recruiter, you will own full-cycle recruiting for engineering and manufacturing roles, from intake through offer close. Your responsibilities include sourcing senior talent from aerospace, robotics, and hardware companies through creative outreach and relationship building. You'll partner with hiring managers to define hiring criteria, build interview scorecards, and establish evaluation processes that maintain a high bar. You'll manage the recruiting funnel end-to-end, tracking pipeline KPIs, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing improvements. A key part of the role is closing exceptional engineers against competing offers from larger companies by authentically pitching Icarus's mission and technical challenges. You'll develop deep technical understanding of the company's aircraft and systems to credibly engage with engineers. Operating in a fast-paced, high-intensity environment, you'll build recruiting processes from scratch as the function scales. The role requires fluency with data and metrics to diagnose and solve recruiting challenges. The ideal candidate has 2+ years of full-cycle technical recruiting experience at a hardware company or hiring mechanical, electrical, embedded, or software engineers. You should have demonstrated sourcing ability with specific examples of senior engineers you've found and closed. Technical curiosity is essential—you don't need an engineering degree but should be comfortable reading spec sheets and understanding technical details. You thrive in environments without established process, can operate with high autonomy, and are committed to feedback and continuous improvement. The culture emphasizes engineering excellence over management overhead, with a small team of world-class builders focused on real problems and execution.
